Meeting Dr. Pam Popper

Last week “Going Veg” took a day trip to Seal Beach to meet and chat with Dr. Pam Popper, founder of the Columbus, Ohio-based Wellness Forum. Like so many others, her work has been inspired and influenced by T. Colin Campbell’s The China Study and she is actively involved with Dr. John McDougall‘s program in Santa Rosa, California. She appears in the upcoming documentary “Forks Over Knives” and has written a book with T. Colin Campbell about the experience and the film’s themes.

We had a great time with Dr. Popper, shooting our extensive interview on the beach and the pier before taking in a great vegan lunch at the Good Mood Cafe in Huntington Beach.

Once More Into the Plant-Based World

The second round of interview travels took the Plant-Based Dietitian to Beverly Hills and Northern California. In Beverly Hills, Going Veg met up with Ironman Triathlete Brendan Brazier, author of Thrive and co-founder of the Vega line of food products.

From there a hearty itinerary was put in motion (almost as hearty as the pea soup at Pea Soup Andersen’s in Santa Nella) and included two stops in Santa Rosa where Going Veg sat down with Dr. John McDougall, author of The McDougall Program: 12 Days to Dynamic Health, and the founder of the McDougall Program, a ten-day intensive live-in course for those seeking better health and nutrition.

The next stop was at TrueNorth, a residential care facility founded by Dr. Alan Goldhamer specializing in water fasting and whole food plant-based nutrition. Over 7000 people have been brought to better health by Dr. Goldhamer and his staff of medical professionals including DrT. Colin Campbell whom Going Veg visited in Ithaca, New York.

In Orland, California Going Veg stopped by Farm Sanctuary and was given a personal guided tour of the entire farm thanks to Leanne. Thanks, Leanne! Farm Sanctuary rescues animals from factory farms and other situations, nurses them back to health and provides a safe, peaceful place for them to live out their days. Cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, ducks and rabbits all live on the farm in north-central California. It’s an inspiring place for not only is a whole food plant-based diet good for you, it’s good for the environment and other living creatures on the planet.

After leaving Orland, and following the usual sage advice of GPS specialist, GiGi:

Julieanna and Jesse took the Plant-Based world out for the evening at Milennium, a vegan restaurant on Geary St. a few blocks from Union Square. The food was excellent: a black bean torte, pumpkin curry, Carribean jerk tempeh, sea vegetable and avocado salad and house-made hummus… The next morning on the way of out town, a last stop was made at Cafe Gratitude for yet another meal of incredible raw vegan food. For the uninitiated, ‘raw’ in this case doesn’t actually mean ‘raw’ but rather cooked at lower temperature to best preserve the food’s natural nutrients instead of cooking them right out.

Going Veg returned to Los Angeles with five hours of exquisite footage. We know you can’t wait for what we’re cooking up in the Plant-Based world!

Veg-ing Out in Loma Linda!

Friday, November 20th – Going Veg trekked out to Loma Linda and the medical center/university there to meet up with two more prominent vegan doctors. Both Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and Dr. Neal Barnard were there as part of the CHIP conference – no, that’s not an Erik Estrada fan club gathering! Founded by Dr. Hans Diehl, CHIP is an acronym for Coronary Health Improvement Project, you can read more about it HERE.

The Plant-Based Dietitian was thrilled to meet both Doctors Esselstyn and Barnard and they graciously gave of their time before the Going Veg cameras.

Doctor Caldwell Esselstyn is the author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. He has been associated with the Cleveland Clinic since 1968 and he organized the first National Conference on the Elimination of Coronary Artery Disease.

Doctor Neal Barnard is the founder and president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) and the author of Doctor Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes.

As the Plant-Based Dietitian stated, it was “another amazing day in the plant-based world.”

Plant-Based Potluck, Presentation and Mike Anderson!

Last Saturday, The Plant-Based Dietitian co-hosted a vegan potluck at the Lake Sherwood home of Elena and John Dwight where a cornucopia (no pun intended) of vegan dishes and delights were prepared and set out for the guests, many of them not vegan… yet.

After a nosh session that rivaled a frenzy of blood-thirsty Great White sharks, Julieanna took the stage and presented her Plant-Based approach to nutrition and dietary excellence.

Also on hand for the evening was Mike Anderson, author and filmmaker (see Healing Cancer from the Inside Out and Eating).

Julieanna extended the invitation for Mike to share a few words with the folks on hand and he gladly accepted, delving into the serious issue of Free Markets or lack-thereof when it comes to producing food in America. The evening was captured on camera for Going Veg with The Plant-Based Dietitian as we continue on Julieanna’s mission to save the world.

Saturday, November 7, 4:45AM – we dropped the car in long term parking and trudged to the airport. Six hours later we were racing along I78 leaving the New York City skyline behind us, heading straight into the sun. Our first stop was at the home of Dr. Joel Fuhrman a whole-food, plant-based physician and author of Disease-Proof Your Child and Eat to Live.

He and his family welcomed us with open arms, salad and soup before we headed to Dr. Fuhrman’s office to set-up and record our interview with him. The time spent was informative and compelling and the resulting video, priceless. Sunday morning, after Julieanna was interviewed for Dr. Fuhrman’s website, we hit the highway again, into Pennsylvania, over the Poconos, through Scranton and into Ithaca, NY where we met Meghan and Mikaela from the T. Colin Campbell Foundation who put us up, fed and entertained us. We visited E Cornell Online (where Julieanna is currently working, albeit from home in LA) before meeting T. Colin Campbell, Professor Emeritus at Cornell and author of The China Study, and sitting down to another amazing interview at his home overlooking picturesque Lake Cayuga.

Later, after being treated to another great meal, we climbed into our well-packed Saturn Outlook and following the sage advice of Gigi, our intrepid GPS locator, made the four and a half hour trek back to Newark in three hours and forty-five minutes. We’re thrilled with our first round of interviews, our footage is great. We hit the road again in early December, this time a little closer to home in the Bay Area. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Joel Fuhrman, his family and Elijah; Meghan and Mikaela; T. Colin Campbell and his wife Karen. Now eat your vegetables!!!
